Five Gold medals Berliner Wine Trophy 2021

The Coviñas Group has emerged triumphant from its participation in the summer edition of the Berliner Wine Trophy, Germany’s most influential wine competition, held in the German capital from 8 to 17 October. At this year’s event, almost 170 experts from around the world demonstrated their tasting ability over ten consecutive days. During the event, the professional judges tasted more than 6,000 wines from 38 countries.

The late date of the event, almost clashing with the grape harvest, didn’t affect the characteristic efficiency of the organization, considered the most influential wine competition in Germany. In 2021, in terms of volume of samples, the BWT was once again the largest independent wine competition in the world, it is also sponsored by the OIV (The International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and supported by the International Union of Oenologists (UIOE), and it is all carried out under the supervision of a legal notary.

The following Coviñas wines were awarded a gold medal at this prestigious competition:

Veterum Vitum 2019

This is a classy red wine made from vines from carefully selected plots that are on average 80 years old. A limited number of bottles of this select Bobal are made after hand-picking the grapes, followed by traditional winemaking. It gains body and complexity through maturing in second-year French and American oak casks. This time spent in oak, which ranges from 3 to 6 months, rounds out the tannins to give structure and elegance to this unique wine.

Aula Tinto 2020

This still red wine is the fruit of a careful selection of the best grapes from our Bobal and Tempranillo vineyard plots, which separately undergo traditional vinification before subsequent blending, producing this typically Mediterranean vibrantly youthful red wine.

A de Autor Syrah 2018

This signature red wine is made from a selection of grapes from the best Syrah vineyard plots. It is a deep, dark cherry red in colour, with glints of violet, against a background aroma of ripe fruit alongside a touch of toast, resulting from the time spent in cask. There are flavours of blackcurrant, plum jam, blackberry and spices followed by a long and elegant finish.

A de Autor Merlot 2018

A new signature red wine made from carefully selected Merlot grapes. It is an attractive, intense, dark cherry colour, with hints of purple at the side of the glass. It offers aromas of red strawberries, blackberries and blueberries, making it a distinctive red wine, rich, lush, powerful and well structured, with just a hint of sweetness against a spicy background.

Aula Crianza 2018

This is an approachable wine, evocative of red strawberries with that touch of spice typical of the Bobal and Tempranillo grapes. These are carefully selected before undergoing traditional winemaking and subsequent blending. This wine, too, gains structure and complexity in American oak casks, in which it matures for of between 9 and 12 months.

The Silver medal went to Sierra Salinas Cava Brut, an excellent family choice for the forthcoming Christmas holidays.
