Coviñas continue to garner awards and accolades
Coviñas garnered another 5 medals at the Portugal Wine Trophy, a competition that since it began in 2014 has grown to become one of the largest wine competitions in the country, especially in terms of international recognition and value.
At the most recent edition, two of the Gold Medals awarded to Grupo Coviñas were won by Veterum Vitium and Aula Crianza, two red wines that previously earned Gold Medals at the Berliner Wine Trophy. While Veterum Vitium is a prestige red wine made from selected Bobal vines with an average age of 80 years, Aula Crianza is an approachable wine with hints of red strawberries and a touch of spice, characteristic of Bobal and Tempranillo grapes, which have been carefully selected before undergoing traditional winemaking and careful blending.
The A de Autor Cabernet Sauvignon was the third wine to be awarded a Gold medal. This single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine whose dark cherry red colour is in contrast to its light and well-balanced flavour, all smooth tannins and notes of liquorice and chocolate.
The other two Gold medals went to two of the winery’s well-known cavas, Sierra Salinas Brut, a Valencian sparkling wine made with 100% Macabeo, and Sierra Salinas Brut Rosé, a 100% Garnacha rosé cava, just the thing for a classy aperitif.
2021 ended well for Coviñas, with a bumper crop of awards, including the accolade from the UR DOP for one of its flagship wines, with the Enterizo Bobal rosé being chosen as the wine to represent the Denominación de Origen in the Bobal rosé category for 2022. Additionally, two Gold medals were won at the Proava awards (one in the single-varietal competition and the other in the 6th official Proava wine competition in the rosé category).
But it seems that Proava’s abundance of awards for its two most representative ranges – Enterizo (aimed at the off-trade) and Aula (on-trade) – was a glimpse of things to come with further consolidation being planned for these two ranges in the coming year.
Adding to the end of year celebrations, the Vivir del Vino 2022 guide, under the editorship of Raúl Serrano, has garlanded 9 Coviñas wines with scores between 90 and 92 points, with 5 of these going to the AULA range. Veterum Vitium 2019 earned the highest score with 92 points, followed by 7 wines from the AULA range that were rated at 90 points: Aula Crianza 2017, Aula Blanco Macabeo Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Aula Bobal Tempranillo 2020, Aula Bobal Rosado 2020, A de Autor Syrah 2018, A de Autor Merlot 2018, A de Autor Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and, with 89 points, the Aula Verdejo 2019.
Similarly, the Gilbert & Gaillard guide, an essential reference work for professionals and wine lovers all over the world, one which is focused on quality wines that are true to their terroir, has published the results from the first tastings of the new vintages that are due to reach the market in 2022, acknowledging the quality of wines from these two Coviñas ranges by awarding the following scores:
Double Gold (90 points) went to Aula Verdejo 2021 and Enterizo Bobal Rosado 2021; and Gold to Aula Bobal Rosado 2021, Aula Macabeo Sauvignon Blanc 2021 and Enterizo Macabeo 2021.
